Hey Reader,
⏀ Unreasonable Hospitality – Michelin awarded restauranteur notes we are in a 75% service economy. That’s profoundly different from the industrial economy America used to have. ⏀ Idea I’m mulling – Attentional health. In a world of more texts, emails, Slack threads, X/Twitter posts, TikTok reels and more – the sheer amount of the content that’s coming at us is unprecedented. And it’s not just volume, but the velocity of that data – instantaneous, 24/7. And that information is more varied than ever. Quite simply, it’s overwhelming and now corporations are using algorithms and AI to influence the news we read, our bank accounts, shopping habits, grocery purchases, who we date and more.
How to differentiate an opportunity from a distraction is an essential skill for thriving in the modern world and choosing what to focus on is the basis of true attention. When that uniquely human quality is manipulated, our agency and well-being diminishes.
So guard your attention as you would your body. Pay attention to what you are paying attention.
And what should you pay attention to? Here’s a simple but profound metric: does paying attention to this give me lasting joy or lasting suffering?
💡Mind your mind and attend to your attention.
⏀ Quote I’m pondering – “I was with Chris [Rock] a couple of weeks ago, and he was talking about a young comic. He was asking the comedian about what he did that day. And the guy said, “Nothing. But I’m going to do a set tonight.” And Chris explained to him “You make money during the day. You collect it at night. During the day is where the money is made. “
