β Idea I’m mulling – Why are doctors so special? Here’s an answer from Italian economist Cipolla who created the Stupidity Matrix . Note stupidity doesn’t mean IQ but rather social value.
The challenge for doctors is that we are the intelligent but we work in a bandit industry (healthcare). This fundamental tension is the cause of burnout, decreased physician wages, more regulatory oversight and all sorts communal ills. Cipolla cautions us that the intelligent always underestimate the number and influence of the stupid. Do so at your expense.
π‘ Don’t be stupid. Be a lamp, lifeboat or a ladder. Ambition is the intelligentsia’s vice but without social purpose, it is just stupid. But neither be naive. There are bandits around you.
β Quote to ponder:
I think that’s growth. I miss my parents dearly, but I’m a different human with my parents gone than i was when they were here. Now I’m a man. I don’t have parents anymore, so I live differently. I understand the quality of life. I don’t look at my phone as much. I walk. I pray more… So the key to self-improvement is simple: Have your parents die. [Laughs] You know what’s crazy? My mother’s death broke me. It shattered me into a million pieces, because that was my girl. I never got married because I never wanted my mother to be jealous of a woman… Those were my last words [to her]. I said ” Take that to heaven with you.” –
-Comedian Marlon Wayans on losing his parents, and almost 60 people, in the last few years

π‘ The future is made now with risk taking, ingenuity, and resilience. The market will not reward pre-emptive problem solving but the world still needs it.

β Genius Hype beast– Our culture loves to celebrate the sole genius. But what if this culture actually impairs performance as opposed to help it? This week’s episode of Hidden Brain interviews with business professor Mary Murphy who argues for a culture of growth instead.
π‘ A growth mindset is not just for individuals but organizations as well.
