Hey Reader,,
⏀ Why Doctor’s Never Become Wealthy – In this post with his usual crackling prose, NYU Business Professor Scott Galloway explains the difference between earners and owners and why the tax code favors the latter. Choice quote: If you’re ever featured in a commercial calling you a “hero,” it means you’re getting fucked.
💡 America is an ownership society. Earners, including doctors, are aggressively taxed so they don’t even “own” their own labor.
⏀Red Lobster Woes – It wasn’t the all you can eat cheap shrimp that did in the franchise (although it didn’t help), it was private equity. Read this piece to see how PE fleeced the restaurant chain and what that may portend for healthcare.
💡 PE is aggressively investing into healthcare. The money they are enticing providers with have strings attached.
⏀ Idea I’m mulling – There is no perfect business. There is no perfect job. No perfect life. There are trade-offs in all areas of life because not system can optimize for all variables. So you have to decide. And how do you do that? By knowing your values. Having clear priorities. Being clear on what is worth sacrifice and what isn’t. From here comes meaning and purpose and ultimately fulfillment. The modern ad industry would tell you otherwise – that you can have it all. You can’t, at least not all at once. Nor would you want to.
💡 The beauty of life is its imperfections. The trick is to see that.
⏀ Quote to ponder:
They are not your peers. You’re better than all of them. But you need to get out of their circle and develop your own voice
-Chris Rock
💡 You have to leave your colleagues if you expect to lead. There is safety in numbers but rarely excellence.
⏀ EMRs are worse than you imagine – Larry Ellison of Oracle fame has a vision to use AI to find hidden insights in EMRs and save lives and transform the”backwards” healthcare industry. This BI profile demonstrates how disastrous his efforts after buying Cerner have been.
💡 Technology is a magnifier. Introduce it into a broken system and expect worse outcomes 10x.
