Hey Reader,

⏀ Succession- Most high performers (aka you) think of their successes as a great book as HBS professor Arthur Brooks notes in this short video. But they never think about the ending, leading to the exact challenges President Biden is facing right now.

💡Learn who you are beyond the roles you have. Mentor the next generation. Craft an ending to your story to rival Dickens.

⏀ The Newsroom – Famed newspaper the Washington Post has been under tumult as two of its chief editors have been accused of unethical journalistic practices during their time in the UK. In this HBR article, the author describes the newsroom politics that affect all jobs. Choice quote:

” We are fully into the era of stakeholder capitalism, and that means CEOs must be seen increasingly like politicians. “

💡Politics cannot be avoided and the Post challenges is a lesson in leadership during crisis. Be transparent, apologize sincerely, and balance patient with urgency.

⏀ What is my motivation? – Speaking of jobs, more and more employees are feeling stuck, de-motivated or flat burnt out. Doctors anyone? But this trend is spreading in all industries and employers are faced with how to support the modern worker of the 21st beyond just benefits and pay.

💡Workers want growth, purpose and autonomy from their jobs not just money. Your vision as a CEO or doctor has to be large enough to include theirs. If it’s not, expect constant turn-over.

⏀ Quote I’m mulling- “If I can stop one heart from breaking/ I shall not live in vain; / If I can ease one life the aching/ Or cool the pain / Or help one fainting robin/ Unto his nest again / I shall not live in vain.” – Emily Dickinson

💡What we can do is always less than what the world needs. But if we focus on the latter on the expense of the former, we become nihilistic. If we focus on the former at the expense of the latter, we become selfish. The balance is everything.

⏀ Thank You Berry Much – A fascinating breakdown of taste engineering and the systems needs to produce and market the sweetest berries to the modern palate. This is a great example of how knowing your ideal customer avatar (ICA) helps determine business (and crop) strategy.

💡 All systems can only optimize for one or two variables and make trade-off’s in the process. Which ones to make depends on who your customer is – both demographics (race, age etc) and psychographics (what they care about)
